Weekend Homesteader

This is how I’m feeling lately, I’m a weekend homesteader.  The ‘9-5’ jobs we have Monday – Friday have been leaving us too tired to do much in the evenings.  This past week, I did good just to get dinner fixed.  Which is fine, there are going to be days…weeks like this.  It doesn’t help with the sun setting so early either.

This weekend, I got out there and got things done.  Saturday was spent getting errands done (after I got a massage – Christmas present from last year that was about to expire).  We took a cedar chest to our oldest daughter that is getting ready to move to Washington.  (She’s having her stuff shipped and had been storing the chest at the house).  We had lunch with her and then took a drive in the country to buy some hay for the goats.

They were very happy to get some hay.  They haven’t been getting as much time to graze with the sun going down so early.

Then I loaded up the back seat of the car with the stuff that I decided to part with when I cleaned out the kitchen cabinets.  We took it to a local thrift store that helps the less fortunate.

After that we headed to the grocery store.  Typically, I like to do my shopping in the very early morning hours, but since the day had been spent running errands I decided it would be best to finish the day with the shopping.

This left Sunday free to do some much needed cooking.  I have found that this brings me a lot of joy.  It allows me to get away from that 9-5 world and plan the homestead.

I slept in until 6am!  This is huge!  I’ve been waking up at 3:30 – 4:00am for several weeks.

I was in the kitchen cooking by 6:30 while the rest of the house slept.

I made a batch of the Homemade Kind bars.  This time I doubled the recipe and added dried cranberries.

Then I made a batch of Breakfast Burritos.  I made quite a bit of extra so I could stock up my parent’s freezer as well.  My husband will take them to work this week for breakfast.

I also made Chicken Tettrazine (Cheesy Spaghetti).  This will be wonderful one night this week.  All I’ll need to do is pop it in the oven and throw together a salad to go with it.

I split everything I did today so I could take some to my parents.  They have done so much for us over the years, it’s the least I can do.

We had a nice visit with them and then I came home and cleaned out the goat pen.  I like to rake the manure out the best I can at least once a week.  It will make really good compost this next Spring.

In between all of this, I have been doing laundry to get ready for the week to come.

So, as the weekend homesteader that I seem to be right now, here is my 4th blog for the weekend.  I think of things to write about through the week, but just haven’t had a chance to do it (or couldn’t keep my eyes open long enough of an evening).

It was a busy, but wonderful weekend. They are exactly what I need to get re-energized for the week.  It’s the reminder I need so I know why I’m going to that ‘9-5’ all week.  We have a goal to retire younger and weekends help me keep my focus.

With that, I’m retiring for the evening.  Time to change over laundry again.  LOL!

Enjoy this video of Ranger.  The goats LOVE their crackers.  I just need to rustle the package and they come running.  Woodrow is usually by my side already.
