Year One is in the Books!

My how time flies!  I started this blog one year ago.  I thought I would take some time to look back and see how it went.  Accomplishments and failures.

I went back and read my very first post, How we started Homesteading and read through the goals that we set.

Some of the things on our list are paying off the house, putting in solar panels, planting an orchard, increasing the size of the garden, and raising chickens, pigs and cows.  Stay tuned to see how this goes.  We’re just getting started.

So- let’s see how we did.

Finances:

  • Our emergency fund is fully funded.  Woohoo!  We have 6 months of expenses saved up.  Trust me, it’s worth the sacrifice to get to this point.  It does help you sleep better.
  • We put a nice dent in the mortgage and put an extra twenty grand on the principle!
  • We’re doing much better with budgeting.  For me it’s an ongoing, work in process.

Garden:

  • We definitely increased the size of the garden this year.  I’ve put away quite a bit of the harvest.  We’ve had some failures along the way (i.e. lost all the corn), but we’re learning form them so we can improve it next year.

Animals:

  • We didn’t get any of the animals that I mentioned above, but we did get 3 goats over the year.  We’re learning so much about animal husbandry.  We really want to get cows, but those probably won’t come until the house is paid for.

Solar Panels & planting an orchard:

  • We didn’t do either of these this year.  The solar panels will be a big investment.  They are definitely on hold until the house is paid off.  I’m still hopeful that we can get the orchard started this Fall.

You definitely don’t want to go down the Homesteading path with debt.  It’s only going to drag you down and give you sleepless nights.  The constant worry of living paycheck to paycheck is going to make you sick.  Being debt free is a wonderful thing.  I can’t imagine what it will be like to have a paid for home.

Thank you for your support and kind words over this past year.

Here’s to the start of the 2nd year!  I can’t wait to see what it brings!
